The Opening Program of Habing Katutubo 2025, held on November 29, 2025 at the SMX Convention Center Aura, formally marked the beginning of the 6th Philippine Indigenous Wears and Tapestries—bringing together culture bearers, designers, community leaders, and advocates in a shared celebration of living heritage.
A Cultural Welcome Rooted in Tradition
The morning program opened with the arrival of delegates and guests, followed by a solemn Doxology led by the organizing team of Habing Katutubo Collective Inc. The Philippine National Anthem, rendered by Cadi Unterberg, set a dignified tone, grounding the event in national pride and unity.
Words of Purpose and Vision
Maila Alog, Founder and Head Designer of Habing Katutubo Collective Inc., delivered the welcome remarks—articulating the platform’s mission to preserve, promote, and ethically present Philippine Indigenous weaving traditions through fashion, education, and community collaboration. Her message emphasized respect for cultural sources, fair partnerships with Indigenous weavers, and the role of creative platforms in sustaining heritage livelihoods.
Opening Performance: Salinda-Kasaligan
The opening performance featured Salinda-Kasaligan, a Blaan traditional dance, presenting a powerful expression of Indigenous spirituality, identity, and resilience. The performance served as both a cultural invocation and a reminder that Habing Katutubo is deeply anchored in ancestral narratives and embodied traditions.
Intermission Highlight: Retaso Inabel Upcycling Project
An intermission segment showcased The Retaso Inabel Upcycling Project by Harriet Bugaoan, Junior Designer, featuring Cordichic by Maila Alog. This segment highlighted sustainability, textile innovation, and the creative reuse of Indigenous handwoven materials—aligning heritage preservation with contemporary environmental responsibility.
Ribbon Release and Institutional Support
The ceremonial ribbon release was led by PCOL Byron Allatog, Officer-in-Charge of the Taguig City Police Station, symbolizing institutional support and multi-sectoral collaboration in cultural advocacy. This was followed by an official message from Lani Cayetano, Mayor of Taguig City, affirming the city’s support for Indigenous communities, creative industries, and sustainable cultural initiatives.
Setting the Tone for Two Days of Cultural Exchange
Hosted by Marcky Perez as emcee, the Opening Program successfully set the tone for the succeeding segments of Habing Katutubo 2025—from fashion showcases and weaving demonstrations to dialogues with culture bearers and designers. More than a ceremonial launch, the opening affirmed Habing Katutubo’s role as a national platform where Indigenous identity, artistry, and contemporary expression converge with dignity and purpose.
