Baguio City, Philippines — On November 27, 2021, the Habing Katutubo 2021 event took place at the BCNHS Auditorium in Baguio City, bringing together indigenous culture, traditional weaving, and contemporary fashion. The event was a powerful showcase of Filipino craftsmanship and cultural heritage, featuring a combination of one month exhibit, live demonstrations, vibrant fashion shows, and cultural performances that left a lasting impact on the attendees.

 



Weaving Demonstration: Preserving Indigenous Craftsmanship

The event kicked off in the morning with a weaving demonstration that celebrated the intricate art of traditional weaving. This session featured renowned indigenous weavers:

·         Mrs. Rosalina Salifad, a Bontoc weaver from Mt. Province, who demonstrated the loom weaving technique, a cherished practice in the Cordillera region.

·         Mrs. Evelinda Otong, a Yakan weaver from Basilan, shared her skills in creating the stunning, geometric patterns characteristic of Yakan textiles.

Their demonstration gave attendees an opportunity to witness firsthand the meticulous process and cultural significance of weaving, offering a deeper appreciation for the tradition that continues to thrive in many indigenous communities.

 

Cultural and Fashion Show: A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Style

In the afternoon, the stage transformed into a stunning runway for the highly anticipated Cultural and Fashion Show. The show featured an impressive lineup of local designers, as well as distinguished guest designers, showcasing a harmonious blend of indigenous textiles with contemporary fashion. The fashion show was led by MA79 by Maila Alog (Head Designer) from Baguio City, whose designs beautifully incorporated native fabrics with chic, contemporary looks.

 

Featured Designers included:

·         Julie’s Collections by Julie Vergara from Mountain Province, who brought a fresh take on Cordilleran-inspired fashion.

·         Ibadum by Ricmar Agas from La Union, presenting pieces that reflect the diverse culture of the northern regions.

·         Comfy & Style by Ron Montes from Rizal, who showcased comfortable yet stylish garments that blend traditional Filipino elements with urban fashion.

·         Stylish Cordillera by Amy Balbawang from Belgium, who highlighted the beauty of the Cordillera’s cultural heritage with elegant, globally inspired designs.

·         Haliya Ph by Sofia Deliu from Baguio City, whose collection combined contemporary cuts with traditional patterns, celebrating the stories behind the fabric.

 

Special Guest Designers:

The show also welcomed Norman Peñaflorida from Manila and Marissa Bomogao from Baguio City as guest designers, adding their unique creative visions to the event. Additionally, JCI Baguio Sunflower Merch contributed vibrant and meaningful designs, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the local community.

 

Cultural Performances: A Journey Through Filipino Traditions

The Habing Katutubo 2021 event was not just about fashion; it was a celebration of the Philippines' rich cultural heritage. The cultural performances featured two captivating groups:

·         Timpuyog Ti Gangsa, with a special participation from , presented the vibrant dances of the Cordillera, reflecting the strength and beauty of the region's tribal traditions.

·         Gonoyebong Performing Arts from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, performed the traditional dances of the Tboli people, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural life of the Tboli community, known for their stunning costumes and graceful movements.

The performances were a testament to the enduring spirit of Filipino culture, showcasing the diverse dance forms and rituals that have been passed down through generations.

 

A Powerful Tribute to Filipino Craftsmanship and Culture

The Habing Katutubo 2021 event was more than just a fashion show—it was a tribute to the vibrant cultural heritage of the Philippines. By merging the old with the new, the event celebrated indigenous craftsmanship, the rich tapestry of Filipino traditions, and the evolution of Filipino fashion.
